Follow @9jaLife PHCN worker, security guard electrocuted in Ikosi -Ketu, cars burnt IT was another tragic day in Ikosi area of Lagos Thursday, after a high-tension cable of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) fell into a compound: No. 24 Ikosi, Ketu, Lagos. A resident, who coincidentally, was an employee of PHCH, was electrocuted as well as a security guard in charge of the compound. The Guardian reliably gathered that residents of the area were alerted by shout of Fire! Fire! Fire! from the landlord of the one storey buildings, at about 5.10a.m. The guard, simply identified as Garuba, in attempting to prevent the fire from escalating and to salvage his master's Peugeot car, which was already burnt by the fire, mistakenly stepped on the cable, and he was killed instantly. A witness told The Guardian that the PHCN employee, identified as Mr. Oshinjirin, who parked his car at the same spot where the PHCN cable dropped, rushed out with a bucket of water, only to also step on the naked cable and he died. When The Guardian visited the scene at about 3.30p.m. yesterday, sympathizers were sighted discussing the tragedy that had befallen them. One of them, Tosin, said: " I live in the next compound. I was on my way to work at about 5.10 a.m. Suddenly, there was a spark from the pole. I thought it was the usual spark experienced in the area. When I discovered it was a high-tension cable, I warned everyone in our compound not to come out. They adhered to my warning," Tosin said. Another occupant of the building, Mrs. Kawonishe, explained that the late Oshinjirin rushed out of his flat, apparently to contain the fire from spreading to his Toyota Corolla vehicle with Registration Number KTU 643 AW, which was parked close to another that was affected by the fire. " As Ihewent out with a bucket of water, he could not gain free access to the car on fire because there was another car parked right at the entrance. So, he tried to maneuver his way in between his car and the other to join the security guard in putting out the fire. [...]
