Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested an internet fraudster, Peter Amune for defrauding a man under the pretence of selling a car to him through public auction of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS).
An electronic statement issued yesterday by the command's Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi said Amune, who hailed from Osomurika area of Igarra in Edo state, was arrested in Auchi, Edo State on September 16, 2013 following a manhunt by the police.
The PPRO in the statement said the suspect collected the sum of two hundred thousand naira (N200, 000) from an unsuspecting buyer, one Mr. Johnson Umeugoji who said he saw the announcement of the auction placed on the internet.
He also stated that Umeugoji had followed up on the suspect's instruction which requested him to report at Agbara for the public auction purportedly carried out by the Customs after paying into the suspect's bank account in Auchi, Edo state.
Adejobi said the victim on realising that he had been duped ran to Agbara Divisional Headquarters of the Ogun State Police Command where he reported the matter.
The statement read: "The suspect has confessed to the crime. He confirmed that he belongs to a syndicate that is fond of duping people with such modus operandi. The command wishes to advise members of the public to always be sure of any transaction they want to venture into so as to avoid being duped by unscrupulous elements."
