Nigeria needs to generate at least 38,900 megawatts, mw, of electricity to join the league of world's top power generating countries.

The top 20 club was dominated by United States (1,085,950mw), China (864,225mw), Japan (268,750mw), Russian Federation ( 259,600mw), India (207,525mw), Canada (162,800mw), Germany (157,800mw), France (142,575mw), Brazil (115,850mw), 142,575mw), Korea Rep (110,975mw), United Kingdom (96,325mw), Italy (78,375mw), Spain (77,775mw), Mexico (64,725mw), Australia (64,275mw), South Africa (63,875mw), Iran (53,625mw), Saudi Arabia (51,050mw), Turkey (49,600mw) and Poland (38,900mw) as at 2009.

The Chairman of Electric Power Foundation, Mr. Otis Anyaeji (an engineer), who made this known at the Worldstage National Electricity Power Conference in Lagos yesterday, said Nigeria would need to work hard to generate 38,900mw which is the present generation level of Poland, to have a place in the enviable club.

Speaking on the contractor's expectations in the ongoing privatisation of the electricity sector, Anyaeji remarked that the country's generation capacity had shown significant increase in the past two decades.

The chairman, who attributed the slow development of the sector to many years of neglect, said the nation's installed capacity which was 523.6mw as at 1972 rose to 6,000mw in 1990.
