Two policemen on duty at the NNPC Mega Station in Gombe were shot dead by some suspected armed robbers yesterday night during an operation that lasted about 10 minutes.
Narrating the incident to journalists, the Assistant Station Manager, Sa'idu Yahaya, who was the only worker left behind after the day's business at about 7:40pm, said he was compiling records when he heard gun shots within the premises.
Yahaya said when he came out to see what was happening, three young men armed with AK 47 rifles approached him and asked for direction to the station's cash room.
He said he told them that there was no cash as the worker handling money had closed for the day. He said the armed men thereafter forced him to the cash office where they found no money.
Yahaya added that the suspects left him and join their accomplices outside the cash office before they fled in a waiting vehicle. According to him, he came out a few minutes later to discover the lifeless bodies of the two policemen on the floor, while the premises was littered with blood.
Confirming the incident to journalists, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Fwaji Atajiri, said investigation had begun and that two of the armed robbers escaped with gunshot wounds after an exchange of fire. He, however, called on members of the public to watch out for anybody with bullet wounds and report such person to security agencies.
Atajiri said: "The Gombe State Police Command will not rest in its ores in ensuring that the state continues to enjoy peace."
