Nigerian girl left disfigured after acid was thrown in her face as she walked home in London
Feb 2nd 2013, 07:03

20 year old Naomi Oni was disfigured for life when a unknown person wearing a niqab threw acid in her face as she walked home from work on Sunday December 30th in Lodge Avenue Dagenham, east London.

Naomi told The Evening Standard that she was on her way back from work when  she heard someone behind her. She explains:

'I'd been working a late shift and was talking to my boyfriend about what we were going to do for New Year when I saw this Muslim woman wearing a niqab covering her face. I thought it was a bit strange at that time of night, but she didn't say anything and I kept on walking.
'Then I felt a splash on my face. It burned and I screamed out. I started running and screaming, holding my face, all the way home. I didn't look back. I got home and I was screaming and banging on the door. I was hysterical. Luckily my godmother, who is a pharmacist, was at home with my mum and she helped me and kept dipping my face in water and trying to calm me down until the police and ambulance got there.
'I was in shock. Saying: "Who would do that? Who would do that?" How could anyone do this?'.
Naomi recently released photos of her disfigured face after police failed to find the person who did this to her. She's now appealing to the public to help her catch her attacker. She said she would never feel safe with her attacker still at large. She also said the attack has destroyed her life
'I look in the mirror and it just isn't me. I'll never look the same again. I've always been outgoing and confident in my job and in my personal life, used to getting attention for the way I dress or my hair, but now I don't want anyone looking at me. I don't want people to see me in public. I don't want to get the Tube or the bus. If I have to go to the hospital I take a taxi.
'I don't know if I'll ever be able to go back to my job. I was planning to go to college in September to study media and fashion, but I don't even know if I'll be able to do that.
Even with the support of my family and friends and boyfriend I feel very alone,' she said. 'Nothing is going to be same anymore.'
Naomi faces years of skin grafts and plastic surgery

Oh dear: Was Genevieve Nnaji dropped from Half of a Yellow Sun movie?

Genevieve Nnaji might have had the opportunity to meet and work with some of Hollywood's finest including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dominic Cooper, Anika Noni Rose and Thandie Newton but new reports claim that her minor role will not make it to the big screen of the adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel "Half of a Yellow Sun."

According to reports Nnaji's role has been cut out from the finished film. It is believed Nnaji's minor role was quite insignificant because her character wasn’t important to the story and was dragging the storyline unnecessarily. Another report says Nnaji who played the role of Ms. Adebayo, a professor who develops a flirtatious relationship with her colleague Mr Odenigbo, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor may still appear in a scene or two.

It wasn’t just Nnaji's scenes that were cut from the movie, a few other characters from the book didn’t appear in the movie because it was impossible to tell everyone’s story.

Half of a Yellow Sun features Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dominic Cooper, Anika Noni Rose, and Thandie Newton. Produced by Andrea Calderwood and directed by Biyi Bandele. The book centers on the Nigerian civil war and was published in 2006.

“FG is watching Boko Haram for 6 months before considering the ceasefire offer”

"FG is watching Boko Haram for 6 months before considering the ceasefire offer"

The Federal Government has intensified its manhunt for Boko Haram sect leaders believed to be hiding in the desert and mountains of northern Mali.

On Tuesday in Geneva, President Goodluck Jonathan had told the Nigerian community that 50 per cent of Boko Haram members received training in terror in northern Mali.

"If you don't solve the problem of Mali, Nigerians will continue to sleep with one eye because the terrorists will like to move from northern Mali to Niger, Chad and of course northern Nigeria.

"Almost 50 per cent of the Boko Haram adherents were trained in northern Mali. Most of the weapons they use come from Libya to Mali and then to Nigeria," Jonathan said.

The Punch reports:

Saturday PUNCH investigations reveal that the Nigerian government is committing a huge amount of money to the prosecution of the campaign against the Islamists in northern Mali because of the belief in security circles that the area has been a haven for wanted commanders of the sect.

Prior to the Mali mission, the Joint Task Force had placed a ransom on the leader of the sect, Imam Abubakar Shekau and 19 others for offences ranging from "killings and bombings to assassination of civilians, religious leaders, traditional rulers, businessmen, politicians, civil servants and security personnel among others," and the destruction of property worth millions of naira.

The task force placed a ransom of N50m on Shekau and N25m each on four others: Habibu Yusuf aka Asalafi; Khalid Albarnawai, Momodu Bama and Mohammed Zangini, identified as members of the "Shurra Committee."

The security outfit also placed a ransom of N10m each on 14 commanders of the sect.

The Federal Government has so far committed $35m into the campaign to liberate northern Mali from the control of the Islamists, President Goodluck Jonathan reportedly said.

As a result of the strong belief in security circles that the Boko Haram top commanders are coordinating attacks within Nigeria from neighbouring Western African countries, key security figures are not jumping to celebrate the declaration by a faction of the group for a ceasefire.

Investigations showed that the nation's secret police, the State Security Service, is not taking the issue of ceasefire with excitement.

The SSS is waiting for the conditions for the planned negotiation to take a position on the issue of peace overture from the sect.

An SSS source said that the Federal Government would observe the sect for at least six months after which steps could be taken on the issue of ceasefire.

It is the position of the operatives that the various factions of the sect might engage one another in a confrontation which might prevent the Federal Government from going into the negotiations expected to seal the proposed ceasefire.

The source said, "On the issue of ceasefire, security agencies are waiting for their conditions. Once we study their conditions, the office will determine what to do, whether to go ahead or not.

"The SSS is getting close to them. They are divided, but the government has to study them. The SSS will observe them for six months. If there is a fight after six months, the government will know that they cannot be negotiated with; they will be ignored.

"We are on the trail of the key leaders of the sect. Security operatives sighted some of them in Mali in December. Some of them are believed to have left Mali but are being trailed."

It was further gathered that this period has become more precarious for the members of the sect even in the Islamic North with the recorded attacks on prominent emirs including Alhaji Ado Bayero of Kano.

It was also stated that the faction of the Boko Haram members purportedly calling for a ceasefire might have been compelled to do so because of the waning support base of the group in the North.

It is believed to be the view of several Muslims outside the North-East that a group claiming to be fighting the cause of Islam would not be targeting prominent figures from an Islamic society for elimination.

"Even among the northerners, there are people who are opposed to them because they are seen to be attacking the northern oligarchy, especially with the attack on Ado Bayero and the Emir of Fika, Alhaji Abali Ibn Mohammed Idrisa.

"Many northerners are of the view that a group claiming to fight the cause of Islam would not attack leaders of Islamic societies. Their sympathy base is fast running dry even in the North," the source said.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Ibrahim, had said that the government would give the Boko Haram Islamic sect a period of 30 days to stop all forms of violence before it could take seriously the offer of ceasefire proposed by the sect's Commander in Southern and Northern Borno, Mohammed Abdulazeez.

"You see, we must treat that with a lot of caution. You understand, there are certain objective tests that will make sense. Let's assume we can have a long period of about one month where no bomb explodes, where nobody is shot, where nobody is beheaded, where no church is bombed, where no mosque is threatened.

"If they can guarantee just one month, then we can begin to talk. You see, we must take this with a lot of caution. That is what I am telling you.

"We hope whatever that must have brought about this will further enhance our security and it's like a recognition of the very futile approach to solving whatever they consider to be their problems. So, we are a bit excited by it but we are taking everything with a lot of caution," he said

iROKOtv To Launch Nollywood Mobile App On Nokia Lumia

iROKOtv To Launch Nollywood Mobile App On Nokia Lumia
Feb 2nd 2013, 06:04

Streaming 'Nollywood' movie service iROKOtv has announced that it is partnering with Nokia to launch the Nigerian company's first mobile app, exclusively on the Windows Phone platform on its Lumia range.

The deal is a way of trying to build momentum for the struggling Finnish phone giant. Nokia which is a major brand in Nigeria has done other content deals on its lower-spec Asha range. This tie-up with the Lagos and London-based company is designed to build awareness for its Lumia range.

For iROKOtv, the deal is about getting access to Nigerian consumers, although the offer is open to any Lumia owner worldwide. A deal in France between Paris-based streaming music service Deezer and Orange resulted in a huge uptake in Deezer users in France. Given that the deal targets just Lumia phones it won't be on that scale.

Jason Njoku, CEO and Founder of iROKO Partners, said Nokia engineers had worked with iROKOtv to help them build the app. "Most importantly, they have helped to optimise it for Nigeria's networks."

Mr. Njoku expected Lumia users in Nigeria, who will get the first three months access to iROKOtv's premium service free, mainly to access the library of 5,000 movies over Wi-Fi networks, although "a lot done technically with this app to make it feasible to use on 3G."

The app will give customers extras including interviews with Nollywood stars and additional news.

Formed in 2010 by Mr. Njoku, the company started life as a YouTube channel before launching as a company in its own right in 2010.

While iROKOtv has been successful in targeting the Nigerian ex-pat community mainly in London and New York, where the company has offices, reaching African consumers has been harder, Mr. Njoku said.

"2013 is Africa year. We are very focused on finding African solutions. There are more people using iROKOtv in London than there is in the whole of Nigeria. This is ridiculous."

Mr. Njoku closed an $8 million funding investment round from Tiger Global in April 2012.

QUOTE ME - Governor Sullivan Chime Will Return To Office Within 10 Days, Says Godswill Akpabio
Feb 2nd 2013, 06:01

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State yesterday [Feb. 1] assured Enugu people that their ailing Governor Sullivan Chime, who has been hospitalised in London since September 2012, will return to the country in the next 10 days.

Speaking with airport correspondents at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on arrival from London, United Kingdom, Akpabio, who was among the three governors that visited the sick governor in his hospital bed in London recently, declared that Chime was hale, hearty and capable of ruling the state upon his arrival.

Akpabio had visited the ailing Enugu governor in a London hospital in company with Governors Gabriel Suswam and Rotimi Ameachi of Benue and Rivers states respectively.

He admonished Nigerians to always trust their representatives and warned against playing politics with people's health.

His words:

I was a part of the delegation that visited the governor in London and I brought a message of goodwill from His Excellency, the Governor of Enugu State. And like I said, we must learn to mourn with those who mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice.

We should not play politics out of people's health. For me, I'm very grateful to God that Governor Chime has recovered fully and he would be assuming duties within the next 10 days.

It's not something that any Nigerian should be sad about. Rather, we should be happy and we should pray that he's returning to the country within 10 days from today and he would be in the government House in Enugu on his seat as the governor of the state.

"I can confirm that because I had interactions with him and he's in good health and he's recovering. Once the doctors give him the go ahead, he will be in the office. You can quote me".

Nigerian Lady Disfigured By Acid On The Streets Of London
Feb 2nd 2013, 04:51

Wicked people abound, may God her totally both inside and out. The perpetrator will not escape the long arms of the law.

A 20-year-old Victoria's Secret shop worker was left disfigured after a masked attacker hurled acid into her face. Naomi Oni was walking back to her home in Dagenham when she attacked just after midnight on December 30. She managed to reach her house where an ambulance was called. Oni has spent the last month receiving skin grafts and nearly went blind after the attack, which left her with serious burns on her head, neck, arms, legs and body.

She has now released the images in a bid to trace her attacker, who fled from the scene. She told the Evening Standard the attack had "destroyed" her life and left her fearful of showing her face in public.
She said: "I look in the mirror and it just isn't me. I'll never look the same again. I've always been outgoing and confident in my job and in my personal life, used to getting attention for the way I dress or my hair, but now I don't want anyone looking at me." Oni says she decided to reveal her injuries after being inspired by model Katie Piper, who founded a charity after an acid attack by her boyfriend.

No arrests have been made and officers from Barking and Dagenham CID are continuing to retain an open mind as to the motive of the attack.
