Monarch relives Jesse riot: I escaped half naked
Dec 1st 2012, 19:26

THE Ovie (monarch) of Idjerhe (Jesse) Kingdom in Ethiope-West Local Government Area of Delta State, HRM, Erhikevwe I, whose palace was razed by irate youths over his refusal to authorize the lynching of a suspected ritualist, on November 13, speaks on how he escaped death by the whiskers . He also sheds light on how he tried to avert the tragedy and the reasons for the vile actions of his adversaries in the kingdom. Excerpt:

By Emma Amaize, Regional Editor, South South

On November 13, your palace was razed by a mob, did you have any premonition as you woke up that day?

I woke up normally without premonition of what later developed. I had plans to go to Asaba to attend the screening for those going on pilgrimage to Jerusalem; so when I woke up, I took my bath and we started our early morning devotion. This was about 6.30 am. One Hon Oyibo, who was to travel with me because his car had no spare tyre , came to join us and, while we were in the devotion, somebody ran into the palace to alert me that they had seen the suspect, who had been inflicting machete cuts on persons and running into the bush.

He appealed to me for support to enable them capture the suspect in the bush and I alerted some of my chiefs and the police to go to the area. Within 30 minutes, they rushed in that the man had been arrested and, in a matter of seconds, the entire palace ground had been overtaken by youths, men, women and children. They all came and the suspect was identified as a Jesse person from Ugbomaja waterside. Initially, they had alleged an Hausa man was committing the havoc and I said thank God, we are making progress.

By this time, the crowd was surging and I overheard them saying the man must die and they were making all the attempts.  I urged the police to take the man away. We had an experience, about a year ago, when one Oyeware from Ejenesa village was alleged to have kidnapped a little girl and was brought to my palace. In the process of preliminary interrogation before the police that I invited came, the palace had been taken over by youths, who snatched the suspect from the police and burnt him to death at the roundabout in the town square.

*Charred remains of the Idjerhe monarch's palace

So, as I heard them say they were going to kill him, I said this thing was going to happen again and it should not happen in my palace. Remembering not long that we had the Port Harcourt Four and, apart from that,  as a king and as human being, I know that it is not good to kill somebody without following due process . That is why I asked the police to take him away and the moment the police took him away, somebody released false information that the man had escaped from the police.

How I escaped
Then, they descended on the house, everything and me. The next moment, there was fire in the house, but I managed to escape by scaling a fence of about seven feet. I jumped down and many others, those who came in good fate to see what will happen were involved. Many of them had to scale the fence.  At  the end of the day, my car, the vehicles of others, who came to my palace, were burnt. The army rescued me from the bush where I hid myself. Eventually, we picked my wife and son and we ended up in Koko, where a Good Samaritan clothed us because we were half-naked, I only escaped with my knickers and T-shirt.  I hardly thought that what happened that day would happen.

When I heard of the alleged ritualist attacking people on Sunday, I  invited palace chiefs against Monday morning to deliberate on the issue and I told the youths to go into the bush and comb all the suspected areas. They complied and one chief brought some traditionalists, who boasted that they could use voodoo powers to track down the suspect. They demanded N40,000, which I gave them. Then, on Monday morning, I asked the chief if the traditionalists and the youths were working together, he told me, yes. While I was expecting to meet with my chiefs as pre-arranged, I was told the youths were advancing to the palace, I was told the traditionalists informed the public that it was the Hausa I allowed to stay in our community that were causing the problem.

They invaded my palace with cutlass, battleaxe
At the end of the day, the police succeeded in making them to leave because they came in their hundreds brandishing cutlass, battle-axe and throwing stone at the palace. That was Monday, after they had been beaten back; this incident of Tuesday came as a surprise. It came as a surprise because one least expected, they knew the efforts I had put in to ensure that the suspect was arrested, but that being what happened, as a student of history, I know for an event, there must be an immediate and remote causes.

Wicked plots against me
For the past two months in the community, we have been hearing rumours of the king receiving a bribe of N30 million from SEPLAT. They say they will kill him, they will do that, we will burn his house, etc. Therefore, on November 5, I invited the leaders and representatives of the community to the town hall and briefed them on the correct situation of things. I showed them correspondences to the government and what I had done in respect of the flow station, on which they alleged I had been compromised and I told them it could not be. I set up a committee to look into the areas of the oil that was found in our kingdom and to advise the community on the way forward in meeting with SEPLAT. The committee submitted their report on June 23. On June 24, I articulated a letter to  Governor  Emmanuel Uduaghan, informing him about a company that was working in our area and confirmed finding oil, but our people want the flow station to be built in our kingdom, not piping our oil to any other place, which the company was contemplating at that time.

Uduaghan summoned a meeting
I told him that my people would not want that, but, by the time this thing happened, government was just trying to act on that letter. Upon my letter, the governor invited the community to meet in Asaba on November 7, but that was not before a lot of harm had been done. All the talks were that the Ovie have been compromised, this and that, even though I set up a committee as demanded by the MoU to look into the issues. The committee I set up had not even reached any agreement with the oil company, but people were already carrying rumours that I had been settled, whereas, there was no iota of truth in the claim.

Ajavwini rebellion
There is also this Ajavwini community palaver, where somebody was nominated as the chair and the minutes of meeting, where the person was nominated was forwarded to me.  A delegation came to brief me for my endorsement. I endorsed the person but some young men, led by one of their leaders and a suspended chief, started to propagate falsehood that the person who was chosen was not a native of Ajavwini and could not act in that position. I felt that they would not know the Ekpe (eldest man) in the community and the elders' council that introduced him to me.

At the end of the day, those youths said they deposed the eldest man, removed his insignia of office and sent them to somebody else to act as Ekpe . Eventually, this eldest man died and the man they took these things to became the defacto head of the community. After sometime, this successor now said it was difficult to brush aside what his predecessor had done and asked that the man who was previously elected as chair should come for his blessings to run his term. The same group came again to depose this old man and appointed a puppet head of community. This brought a big problem, as the community was factionalized. There was a clash, some were taken away by security agents and, as a kingdom, we felt we could not continue to fold our hands and I summoned a meeting of palace chiefs, where we took some resolutions. We wrote to government to intervene and deal with the persons who were disrupting our age-long traditional process of doing things from the village head to the king, etc.

Stoking fire
We were expecting to hear from the government on this letter when the police invited the two factions and directed them to mend fences. On October 1, a few of them from both sides met me in the palace and told me that they were working on the advice of the police and were going to their village to work out modalities for peace. However, after some days, what I saw were women from the community, who claimed they came over the leadership of the community, but it was a smokescreen, as they resorted to demonstration, singing songs and putting up shows that were associated with burial rites of somebody who had passed away. In addition, such an exercise is a taboo in the palace and they did that against all advice, setting up fire and all that. They did a lot of abominable things, I called my chiefs, who appealed to them, but they still refused. I called in the police; they came in around 5.00 pm – 6.00 pm, the women were there for more than five-six hours. Police succeeded in dislodging them. Therefore, it is apparent that some people were using the youths and women to stoke fire in the kingdom.

What I lost
It is difficult to quantify my loss. I have decided to take it philosophically because I came to this world empty and I do not want to brood over property. I was a civil servant for 36 years and the civil servant, even though they do not have anything, I have assets, I have souvenirs, which, when I see, I feel satisfied. I have many things I inherited from my grandfather, my father, etc, which I cannot regain. In fact, many things I have acquired as a king, treasures, gifts from people and all that. I built my house when I was a civil servant. To be able to build that house now, you will be talking about N30- N40 million. I lost two SUVs and other vehicles, properties, documents, my children certificates. As I said, I am taking it philosophically because I know that what I did, I was on the right path and those properties I lost, whatever happens, God is there to provide for me; once there is life, there is hope. Otherwise, what I lost in that place, including my visitors, we are talking about N300 million.

I forgive those who burnt my palace
For those who burnt my palace, I have forgiven them and I pray that God forgives them too. My major regret is that people lost their lives in this incident, which was avoidable. I pray that God gives their families the fortitude to bear the loss.

Lagos hosts Digital Dialogue Conference
Dec 1st 2012, 19:52

By Kafayat Tijani

Digital Dialogue Nigeria 2012, a forum aimed at kick-starting the information and education aspects of digital broadcast migration in Nigeria, holds in Lagos between 5 and 6 December. The conference will afford participants the opportunity to assess Nigeria's preparedness for the digital migration deadline of 2015.

A release by the organisers stated: "Following the International Telecommunications Union, ITU, meeting in July 2006, Nigeria, among other countries, was mandated – under the GE06 Agreement – to migrate from analogue to digital broadcasting system by the year 2015.

But three years to the deadline, the Nigerian public is hardly aware of the planned migration, even though the Federal Government has given its nod to the ITU pronouncement and agreed to migrate to the new order by 2015".  "The forum, which will bring together digital broadcast experts from the country and abroad, leading lights in the Nigerian media and other opinion moulders; hopes to expose Nigerians to the process and benefits of digital migrations".

Expected benefits are that digital migration will afford Nigerians better TV viewing experience, in terms of clearer pictures and better signals. It will also bring greater efficiency to spectrum use, boost the potentials of wireless innovation, lead to greater convergence of telecommunications and broadcasting services, among other economic gains.

The wife of the governor of the State of Osun, Mrs Sherifat Aregbesola, wants recognition of the rights of people living with HIV.  The victims, according to her, should not be stigmatised.

She spoke in Osogbo, the state capital, yesterday, after leading a road show to mark the 2012 World AIDS Day, with the theme, "Getting to Zero",  organised by the Osun State Agency for the Control of AIDS.

According to her, proper measure must be taken to ensure that no new infections take place by constantly adopting safe attitude and ensuring that no one dies from the scourge again.
Mrs Aregbesola stressed: "Let me underscore the point that this target is achievable if all of us work to take positive action individually and encourage ourselves together to stop undesirable attitude that makes the virus spread.

"Having an HIV today does not have to be a dea
th sentence if we go for early counselling and treatment. This is one of the positive attitudes I urge all of us to adopt from now on in order to reach our zero marks".

50% workforce cut controversy: How Sanusi stoked the fire to Gov Uduaghan's amazement
Dec 1st 2012, 20:09

By EMMA AMAIZE

LAST Wednesday, at the Second Annual Capital Market Committee Retreat, in Warri, Delta State,   the Central Bank Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, stirred the hornet's nest when he radically prescribed that government at all levels  should sack 50 per cent of their workforce if the burden of paying of workers' salaries has become so excruciating.

Sanusi spoke against the backdrop of complaints that money available to the federal, state and local governments for capital projects was shrinking, while recurrent expenditure was increasing.
However, some people, particularly workers, believed that they did not hear him correctly and looked askance as he pontificated.

If they thought they did not hear Sanusi correctly, they were mistaken as the stormy petrel intoned, "At the moment, 70 percent of Federal Government's revenue goes for payment of salaries and entitlement of civil servants, leaving 30 percent for development of 167 million Nigerians. That means that for every naira government earns, 70 kobo is consumed by civil servants.
"You have to fire half of the civil service because the revenue government  has is supposed to be for 167million Nigerians. Any society where government spends 70 percent of its revenue on its civil service has a problem. It is unsustainable."

Sanusi said the country does not need over 100 senators and about 400  representatives to make laws. According to him, when the expenses of lawmakers, civil services and executive arm of government are calculated, Nigerians would find out that government, lawmakers and civil servants were the ones consuming their revenue.

He faulted 'wastage' of funds for the maintenance of 774 local government council chairpersons with aides, councilors and other appendages of the third – tier of government.

His asked, "Do we need 774 LGs, do we need 36 states some of which are unviable? Do we need 774 local governments, why not just remove them and have only state governments?"

The CBN Governor added: "There are state governors whose monthly allocation is barely enough to pay salaries. I hear such governors complain and I say 'why complain when the solution is simple?' It is irresponsible to use all money to pay salaries and wait for another month's allocation and pay salaries and after four years you would have done nothing."

Uduaghan tackles Sanusi
However, host Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan quickly countered Sanusi, saying  that sacking of civil servants was a bitter pill that would worsen the socio-economic problems in the country.

To him, the solution canvassed by the CBN chief helmsman was a potential minefield and "a recipe for more trouble".

Uduaghan asked participants at the retreat to look beyond present problems by properly situating  things.

According to the governor, the problem of recurrent expenditure started when companies in Nigeria started closing shops thus increasing the problem of  unemployment. Uduaghan queried, "Where would the graduates of the schools be absorbed?"

CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi

He pointed out,  "The scenario left government with the only viable option, absorb job seekers". Uduaghan cited the example of  Delta State, where tricycles were recently introduced prior to the enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles as a means of transportation in Warri, Effurun and Asaba.

He told participants at the forum that government took a step to provide the tricycles at subsidized rate to erstwhile commercial motorcycle operators to achieve a seamless change and, at the same time, ensure that the commercial motorcycle operators maintained their jobs.
According to  the governor, "Before any rational government can embark on retrenchment of workers, it must plan for them by developing infrastructure that will attract investors."
Adding a political twist to the discourse, Uduaghan said," Sacking of workers would be an unpopular decision … If you advise us to drop workers, many governments will lose the next elections".

He  reeled out the efforts of government in strengthening infrastructure and asked investors to tap into the opportunities that abound in Delta State and help to create jobs.
Sanusi had come under fire from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for the radical prescription.
NLC hits Sanusi

Speaking through its President, Abdulwahed Omar, the NLC said, "We were not shocked hearing the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, once again displaying his contempt for the working people in Nigeria with his recommendation that the Federal Government should sack 50% of its workforce for the economy to be revived"

The statement reads: It has become obvious that there are some individuals parading the corridors of power who are not qualified to be anywhere around organizations saddled with the responsibility of developing policies for national development. Since assumption of office as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, all Sanusi's major pronouncements have been either directly anti people or ruinous to the Nigerian economy."

"The burden of wealth creation in Nigeria, like any other country, has been on workers, while some politicians and economic parasites like Sanusi over consume what the workers sweat to create. Workers are the key driving force of all economies and only a hollow economist like Sanusi will underplay this.
"The major problems of the Nigerian economy are corruption and lack of good governance, and until we solve these problems our economy will continue in comatose.
"Today, there are countless probe reports with names of those who swindled our country of several trillions of both naira and other foreign currencies still living in Nigeria either walking freely around the corridors of power or directly holding public or political offices rather than being in jail.

"We see in Sanusi an agent of death that must be defeated and crushed before he further destroys the Nigerian economy.

"While President Jonathan is promising to create more jobs, Lamido Sanusi is calling for mass sack of civil servants in a country with one of the highest number of unemployed, which has indeed led to gross deprivation and the current state of insecurity in Nigeria.
"While we believe the Federal Government will ignore the ranting of this hollow economist, Sanusi has never demonstrated patriotism in all his advice on economic and financial management in Nigeria.
"Sanusi's onl
y understanding of governance is simply about saving money and not saving lives as his proposals are repeatedly devoid of human content and without consideration for the implications on larger society. The burden that will come with mass sack as high as 50% of civil servants in addition to the already saturated unemployment market can better be imagined. Governance is about improving the quality of lives of the people and not destruction of productive lives.

"To show how unknowledgeable and unfit he is as a public office holder, Sanusi also called for the scrapping of local governments in Nigeria, a country that runs a federal system, no matter how inefficient the system is.

"Local government is an important tier of government in a federal system and what we need is to strengthen the system to enable it deliver good governance to the people, as it is the closest to the grass-roots. Rather than removing the tier as proposed by Mallam Sanusi, the local governments require more funding to enable them function properly as required under a federal system.

"The truth, which Sanusi as a beneficiary is running away from, is that corruption has become a real burden on the economy and it should be the only priority item on the table of any serious government. Even if you sack all the workers in Nigeria, any amount saved from that will be stolen and the culprits will walk in freedom.

"And we need to ask Sanusi how much work he has successfully done in the CBN to reposition it to contemporary realities? He is surrounded with countless aides that are obviously not required by a man who believes that the Nigerian economy runs too high on overhead cost.

"It is obvious Sanusi was never qualified for the office of CBN governor in the first instance, and he must be asked to leave the office as he has shown more than enough incompetence and contempt for the Nigerian people," it stated.

Anambra: Traders Shut Down Nnewi Market Over Kidnap Menace

BY VINCENT UJUMADU

AWKA-TRADERS at the popular Nkwo Nnewi market noted for the sale of motorcycle and parts yesterday closed own the market to protest the menace of kidnapping in the area.

The closure of the market was the final activity marking three days of fasting by the over 15, 000 traders during which they sought God's intervention over incessant kidnappings in the industrial city.

The prayer was also aimed at making authorities to have a change of heart over the rumoured plan to ban Okada business in Anambra.

Chairman of New Auto Spare Parts Association, NASPA, Mr. Christopher Oboh, who addressed the traders said the recent kidnap of their chairman, Mr. Dozie Akudolu, who had been in captivity for over one month, was giving them serious concern, adding that there were other victims yet to be released by the kidnappers.

According to him, the activities of the hoodlums had instilled fears in the minds of big time businessmen in the market, most of whom, he said. had gone into hiding.

He explained that the issue was having negative effect on their businesses, adding that their customers from far and near had become afraid to come to do business in Nnewi.

8 types of guys women avoid dating

8 types of guys women avoid dating
Dec 1st 2012, 19:45

by DFTM

Most women don’t want to deal with a guy who can’t seem to rustle up enough money for a latte, pay their bills on time, or spend his money wisely.

While every woman is looking for something different in a man, there are certain types of men that women go out of their way to avoid. And this is especially true during the early stages of a relationship, when a woman is trying to gauge a man’s personality. Below are eight types of guys that women consistently stay away from.

1. The Financially Irresponsible Guy

A huge red flag is a financially irresponsible man with bad credit who’s constantly buying things he does not need, overdrawing his bank account(s) and maxing out credit cards. Most women don’t want to deal with a guy who can’t seem to rustle up enough money for a latte, pay their bills on time, or spend his money wisely.

2. The Man-Child
This guy is clinging to his glory days when life was less complicated and responsibility was minimal. He's obsessed with video games, frequently attends keg parties and considers Pizza Rolls one of the major food groups. These men are the ones who can't keep a job, blame everyone else for their own stupidity and laziness, and are constantly outraged that the world is not giving them respect.

3. The Narcissistic Guy

One type of attitude guys have that women avoid is being too narcissistic and self-contained. Most women feel that this type of guy is obsessed with himself and would rather spend his time toning his muscles and looking good than on a date with them.

4. The Needy Guy

Women are not attracted to the type of man who needs too much support, validation, and constant reinforcement. The moment a man becomes too insecure and dependent in a relationship, a woman will run for the hills.

5. The Wandering-Eye Guy

This type of man can be the most aggravating for women to deal with because he’s constantly looking at every female but the one he's with. He makes inappropriate comments/gestures about women, ogles the bartender, the woman at the grocery store, even his best friend’s wife, making the woman he’s with feel inferior and unattractive.

6. The Predictable Guy

Women don’t like the routine driven guy who does not like change, lacks spontaneity, and is predictable in all areas of his life from how he will react to situations, decisions he will make, the sex he will have, and the dates he will go on.

7. The Liar

This guy fabricates stories about about pretty much anything in hopes of getting laid instead of just being honest about his life or his desire for a casual fling. While the little white lies about past conquests, jobs, exes, qualifications, and experiences may seem harmless, most women don’t want to deal with a guy who can’t or won’t tell the truth.

8. The Desperate Guy
The desperate man may have a strong want and desire to have a relationship; however, due to having little experience in the romance and dating department, his behaviors can indicate low-self esteem and a host of other issues that turn women off and can actually be viewed as creepy and disturbing.

Man Brings Virtual Girlfriend To His Real Life Wedding
Dec 1st 2012, 20:40

The bride retaliates. A Japanese gamer geek actually had the nerve to impose upon his new wife his crazy obsession with a dating simulator game. Not only did the virtual girlfriend show up at their wedding that held on November 24th, but so did two of her friends (Nene Anegasaki, Manaka Takane and Rinko Kobayakawa are characters from the hugely popular Konami video game, Love Plus). The outrageously popular dating sim Konami video game, Love Plus is taking Japan by storm and addiction has set in. The couples names have been left out of the story to reduce embarrassment.

The bad habit that rots your brain

The bad habit that rots your brain
Dec 1st 2012, 20:19

by K. Aleisha Fetters

Quitting smoking doesn't just stop the damage to your noggin—it can also reverse it.

In addition to increasing your risk of lung cancer, emphysema, and canyon-deep wrinkles, smoking cigarettes also clouds your brain. People who smoke perform worse on cognitive tests than non-smokers, according to a new study published in the journal Age and Ageing.

Researchers from King's College London analyzed data on the health and lifestyle habits of more than 8,000 adults over the age of 50. The subjects then participated in cognitive performance tests, such as memorizing new words and naming as many animals as they could in a minute. They repeated the tests during 4- and 8-year follow-ups. Current smokers scored the lowest on tests of memory, learning, and reasoning skills.

While the exact reason is unknown, smoking increases the risk of vascular disease, brain lesions, and lung injuries, all of which have been linked to cognitive impairment, according to Alex Dregan, Ph.D, study researcher and lecturer in Translational Epidemiology and Public Health at King's College London. (Learn about additional harmful effects of smoking, here.)

Here's the good news: Quitting smoking doesn't just stop the damage to your noggin—it can also reverse it. "Ex-smokers do not show poorer cognitive performance compared to never-smokers," Dregan says. "Thus, it is never too late to quit smoking."

Tried before? You're not alone. While half of smokers try to shake the habit each year, only 6.2% succeed, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fortunately, these tips can more than triple your chances of quitting the cancer sticks for good. Here, five ways to stop smoking:

Mark Your Calendar
Choose a quit date two to four weeks out and write it down, suggests Andrea King, Ph.D., clinic director of The University of Chicago Medicine's Tobacco Cessation Program. By giving your smoking a cut-off date, you decrease your chances of putting it off "just one more day." Just be sure to choose your date wisely: Since major life changes can be triggering to light up again, throwing out your pack on the day of a big work presentation might not be the best course of action, she says.

Embrace Modern Medicine
Talk to your doctor about smoking cessation programs near you, as well as medications that could help you fight the addiction. Withdrawal symptoms—such as tingling, sweating, depression, and even cold symptoms as the lungs clear—can be managed with medication to increase your chances of success, according to King. When you set your quit date, keep in mind that some drugs including CHANTIX and Zyban are directed for use a week before you stop smoking.

Don't Be an Island
Forget "fight or flight"—women have what UCLA researchers call a "tend and befriend" response to stress, due to mounting levels of oxytocin (aka the cuddle hormone). So to effectively deal with a stressful situation like kicking an addiction, women need support, King says. Talk to your friends about how you are doing and how they can best encourage you.

Keep a "Wrap" Sheet
Wrap and tape a piece of paper around your pack of cigarettes. Every time you light up, write down the time, place, what kind of mood you are in, and how important you feel smoking is at that moment. Then, once you're done, rate how good the cigarette was from 1-10, King advises. By monitoring your smoking for a week or two, you can identify your triggers. What's more, you can start to cut back on your habit by eliminating each day's so-so smokes.

Rev Your Metabolism
The average woman gains about 8 pounds when she stops smoking, according to King. "It can be a huge deterrent and causes many women to give up on quit attempts," she says. As a stimulant, nicotine can increase your metabolic burn by up to 200 calories a day, according to a 2010 study published in Nutrition & Metabolism. Stop smoking, and you start burning calories more slowly. Luckily, plenty of healthy habits like strength training, eating breakfast, and staying hydrated can boost your metabolism. Take up these habits as a way to feel more in control of your progress.

When you get caught cheating

When you get caught cheating
Dec 1st 2012, 19:50

by DFTM

One of the worst things you can do after cheating on a girl is try to blame something or someone else.

When you get caught cheating, the whole world comes crashing down. Your girlfriend’s head will seemingly become a whirlwind of pain and anger, and there’s nothing that you can do but stand there and tell her you’re sorry. No amount of apologizing can change her mind, and nothing you can say will ease her pain. In other words, a mere apology just will not suffice.

While there is no one reason why men cheat, most men that engage in these practices are either looking for something that their girlfriend is not providing, they actually desire to be with different women or they are just commitment phobic. All men know or should know that cheating is wrong; however, in troubled relationships, cheating can be an easy alternative to the burden of a relationship breakup. Make no mistake about it–when your girlfriend finds out you’ve been with another woman, she’s going to be furious for a while. Some women will demand to know what happened, how long it’s been going on, and what you’ve been doing with this other woman, etc… As your girlfriend rages against you and the emotions fly, you’ll begin looking for ways to undo what you did. The bad news is that you can’t.

One of the worst things you can do after cheating on a girl is try to blame something or someone else. In a situation like this, she’s concerned with her own emotions, and the last thing she wants to hear about is how “badly” you feel. So avoid telling her stuff like “I feel terrible that this happened”. If you truly love and care about your girlfriend, you should feel some pain and guilt. When she is sufficiently calm, make a heartfelt, genuine apology for cheating on her. Take responsibility for cheating on her and don’t defer the blame onto your lover, how much you had to drink, or whatever. When you agree with her that this is definitely your own fault, her anger can finally start draining away; however, don’t think that just a couple of days will be enough for her to get over what you did.

Some women will cheat on you in retaliation (with a guy who’s hotter than you) or just choose not to forgive you and move on. Even if you’re lucky enough to have a a girlfriend who is truly forgiving, loving and understanding –the relationship will change forever. Make no mistake about it: cheating automatically kills the trust that your lady had for you. Her allegiance and dedication to you will drop immediately, and even if she does not state it verbally, you’ll see the change in her demeanor when she’s around you. She will always have trust issues with you from that moment, and although she may try to forget what you did, she will always be hurt.

Keep in mind that although she may forgive and forget, your girlfriend’s family and friends will always have a longer memory than she does and will still hate you long after she forgave you. You also have to deal with the possibility of the fling that you hooked up with wanting to be your main squeeze and possibly causing even more problems for your already damaged relationship.

How to protect your children from pedophiles

How to protect your children from pedophiles
Dec 1st 2012, 20:00

by Maria Lloyd

Usually more times than not, the s*xual predator is a person who is closely connected to the child's family.

We recently reported the story about the 27-year-old mother who nearly killed her two sons' football coach after one of her sons told her the coach had touched him inappropriately. It's wonderful that the media has been exposing s*xual predators more than ever before, but it's still heartbreaking to learn that children are being s*xually abused daily, especially considering that most of these cases could've been prevented.

As with the mother's of the young men involved in the Eddie Long scandal, the mother in the aforementioned incident is a single parent. It appears that s*xual predators deliberately target children of a single parent, especially a single mother, because the household is more vulnerable without the support of both parents.

It is extremely important that you, the single parent, do everything in your power to protect your children from s*xual predators. Below are four- of many- ways to protect your children from s*xual predators.

1. Have candid conversation about s*xual abuse with your child.

It is extremely important that you educate your children about inappropriate touching. S*xual predators are good at convincing children that nothing is wrong with the heinous act; therefore, making the child think it's okay. It is your responsibility to speak candidly with your child about this inappropriate behavior.

2. Screen people who interact with your child- including relatives, pastors, neighbors, and spouses.

While you can't completely lose trust in everyone, it is important that you do a thorough screening of people who interact with your children. Usually more times than not, the s*xual predator is a person who is closely connected to the child's family. Sometimes these predators are people you trust the most (e.g. your significant other, your minister, your colleague). Contrary to popular belief, s*xual predators are usually not violent people. Before you allow your children to interact with someone, acquire a criminal background screening on them. Watch their behavior. Are they usually always spending time with children and rarely any time with adults? If so, you may not want to allow your children to be in their presence unsupervised.

3. Teach your child how to defend themselves.

Even if a child is raised in a two-parent home, the reality is, your child will spend a lot of time in the world on their own. You have to ensure that they know how to protect themselves in the event of an "attack" of any sort. Whether you enroll your child in karate classes or you teach them yourself, you must teach them how to protect themselves without fail.

4. Have an "open door" policy in your household.

It's important that your child feels comfortable discussing anything with you- even topics that make you feel uncomfortable. The 27-year-old mother who discovered her two boys had been allegedly molested by their coach, was stunned that her son almost didn't tell her about the occurrence. Having an open door policy in your household assures your child that no matter how embarrassing the conversation is, they can always find comfort in having that conversation with you.

5 deadly dating mistakes that you don't realise you are making
Dec 1st 2012, 20:07

by DFTM

Branch out of your dating comfort zone and give a chance to those women you haven't previously considered (think age, looks, profession, interests).

While some dating mistakes are obvious, others can be trickier to recognize. In fact, you may not even know you're making them. So, if you feel as if you are somehow going off track with your relationships, but aren’t really sure how, check to see if you are making any of these 5 dating mistakes:

1. Talking about your ex on your dates

Talking about your ex with your dates is never a good move. Women view men that can’t stop talking about their ex non-stop as having unresolved frustrations and pent-up bitterness. You don't need to go into details about each and every past relationship you've ever had or how you were wronged during any date. She also doesn't need to know exact names, dates or all the gross details about you and your ex’s sex life.

2. Sharing too much information

Don’t give out your resume on the first date. Some of your past is straightforward and can be discussed right then and there; however, the first date is not show and tell time.

3. Having a narrow focus

Always dating the same type of women and expecting different results is a recipe for disaster. Branch out of your dating comfort zone and give a chance to those women you haven't previously considered (think age, looks, profession, interests). Remember that dating only women that you think of as your type has gotten you exactly where you are right now–single.

4. Expecting too much too soon

Nothing turns a woman off and sends her running away faster than a guy who starts moving too fast and expects instant attraction, love and devotion, or even instant great sex after only one or two dates.

5. Giving up power

Lots of guys try to get women to like them by doing whatever the woman wants; becoming too considerate, too helpful and too kind in an effort to seemingly align their lives with a woman's wishes. Don’t be one of them. Women don’t respect pushovers and they don’t feel attraction for “nice” guys who always kiss up to them.

How to recognise if you are in an abusive relationship

How to recognise if you are in an abusive relationship
Dec 1st 2012, 20:28

by Naomi Piercey

Although you may feel like you are betraying your partner, or abandoning him, you have to fight the urge to return to your previous life, and especially the home of the abuser.

Recently, news broke that U.S. women's soccer team goalkeeper Hope Solo married her fiancé, former Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens—the day after he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting her.

According to People magazine, the couple had been dating for two months and had applied for a marriage license a week before the incident.

Although it's unclear what exactly transpired between Stevens and Solo, the rumors serve as a stark and sobering reminder: Anyone can be involved in an abusive relationship, even gold medal-winning, world-class athletes.

Also sobering is the fact that once abuse starts, it's likely only going to escalate and continue, says Steven Stosny, Ph.D., author of Love Without Hurt: Turn Your Resentful, Angry, or Emotionally Abusive Relationship into a Compassionate, Loving One. "Once a behavioral threshold has been crossed, that person is more likely to continue the behavior," Stosny says.

Unfortunately, the longer someone stays in an abusive relationship, the harder it becomes to walk away, Stosny explains. One possible explanation: When a woman becomes attached, she may start to overlook destructive actions with the hopes of changing her partner's actions over time. Moreover, abuse tends to start small and escalate. Abusers follow a pattern of behavior where they put down and belittle their partners, thereby destroying their self-esteem and sense of self-worth. Once emotional abuse escalates into physical abuse, many victims have such damaged self-worth that they blame themselves. Those feelings are compounded by the fact that abusers often isolate their victims from friends and loved ones. With all of these factors working together, sometimes it feels as if leaving is impossible.

That said, while it's hard to escape an abusive relationship, it's not impossible. If you think that you may be involved in an unhealthy and potentially abusive relationship, follow Stosny's guidelines for identifying the bad behaviors, and getting the help you need.

SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR

He Blames You for His Actions
Excessive blame is the one of the first signs that a relationship is becoming abusive, says Stosny. "It's not only blaming you for making him do something, but an abuser will blame someone for every bad feeling they have," he says. Blame is simply a defense against vulnerable emotions. Instead of feeling their own shame, which is powerless, they transfer it to someone else and then they can feel anger, which is more empowering, he says.

He Demeans You
Belittling can take many forms, Stosny explains. It stems from possessiveness and can end up making you feel less than and inferior. If your partner makes you feel like there is something wrong with you for not agreeing with him or he constantly tells you how much smarter and better educated he is, it's a sign of abuse, Stosny says.

He Dismisses Your Feelings
"When you form a bond with someone, there's an implicit understanding that the other person will care how you feel," says Stosny. When they don't have that empathy, it can feel like betrayal. Your partner doesn't always have to agree with you, he says, but he should care that you are hurting.

He Threatens to Hurt You or Himself
Although physical abuse is intolerable, emotional abuse can often have more long-term damage, Stosny says. And when a partner threatens to hurt himself because of something you did, it can invoke guilt and shame. Guilt is what keeps people in attached relationships, no matter how bad they are, he explains. "When someone hits you, you can assume it stems from an impulse control problem," he says. "But when they hurt you psychologically, you are more likely to think their actions stem from something you did."

He is Overly Possessive
Someone who is insecure will want to keep tabs on you and check in on you, but someone who is possessive will forbid you to go places, Stosny says. He may then punish you for "breaking his rules" by withdrawing affection or making things unpleasant for you.

He Doesn't Let You Make Decisions
"Controlling behavior is motivated by anxiety—your mother might be guilty of this because she worries about you," says Stosny. "But dominating behavior is motivated by shame and making others inferior to yourself," he says. Abusive relationships can have both, but mostly they are characterized by dominance, he says.

He Doesn't Try to Change
Everyone makes mistakes. If someone accidentally hurts your feelings, they will apologize, says Stosny. If it happens consistently, and your partner blames you for the outburst, it's abuse, he says. Your partner should issue an immediate apology, take responsibility for their actions, and explain how they will change their reactions or behaviors accordingly.

He Isolates You From Friends and Loved Ones
"The worse thing that can happen to a woman is that she feels isolated," Stosny says. If someone is emotionally punishing their partner by taking away the things they love or refusing to participate in their life, it's easy to lose a sense of reality, he explains. Make sure to remember that your partner doesn't have power over you in this respect, he says.

He Pressures You for Sex
Forcing or incessantly asking you to have sex or perform sexual favors is a sign that your partner may see you more as an object than as a mate, Stosny says. "This kind of pressure doesn't stem from a mutual enjoyment or exchange of affection—it's an indication that you see this person as property," he says.

STEPS TO TAKE

If these warning signs sound familiar, know that leaving the relationship is possible. Here, steps to take to eventually disentangle yourself from the cycle.

Save Money
In a lot of abusive relationships, the abuser may control the finances. But it's very difficult to navigate the world without money, Stosny says. By opening your own bank account, or finding a separate source of income, you can be more prepared to leave the relationship and be on your own.

Develop an External Support System
Confide in friends or family and let them know how you feel and what you plan to do. "What inhibits women to reach out are feelings of shame or embarrassment, and they may also think there is something wrong with them," he says. But finding outside help, even if it's from a counselor or therapist, will help you realize the abuse is not your fault, he says.

Transition with a Friend
Don't give your abuser any indication that you are planning to leave, says Stosny. And, if necessary, pack your things in secret, until you are ready to move out. If you feel nervous to go, ask a male friend or family member to help you move out, so you don't run the risk of being alone with your abuser. "Abusers are less likely to show anger in the presence of other people," he says. "Plus, then you also have a witness, just in case."

Find a Place to Stay
A friend or family member may be able to take you in while you are in your transition period. Although you may feel like you are betraying your partner, or abandoning him, you have to fight the urge to return to your previous life, and especially the home of the abuser, says Stosny.

Reach Out for Professional Help
Alert your local domestic violent organization of your situation. That way your experience is on record, says Stosny. Also, a local women's shelter can help set you up with a counselor.

Over 100 Graves Robbed In Benin For Voodoo Rituals

Over 100 Graves Robbed In Benin For Voodoo Rituals

More than 100 graves robbed in Benin for voodoo rituals

COTONOU (Reuters) – Tomb raiders have dug up more than 100 graves at a cemetery in Benin since Saturday for what authorities suspect is a black-market trade in human organs and skulls for voodoo ritual fetishes.

The incident is the most serious case of grave-robbing in the West African state, the world capital of voodoo where most of the country's 9 million residents practice a benign form of the official religion.

Authorities in Dangbo, a village 10 km (6 miles) from the capital Porto-Novo, began an investigation after a mason working at the cemetery said he spotted several masked men digging up the graves, from which organs and skulls were removed.

"The desecration of graves is about money in this region," said Joseph Afaton, director of the cemetery. "It is for sacrifices, or for bewitching."

Body parts of humans and rare animals are prized by some people in central Africa for their supposed supernatural powers, and are used in occult ceremonies. Traffickers often obtain human remains from grave robbers, but a recent spate of killings has also been linked to the gruesome trade.

Authorities in Cameroon in September arrested five people suspected of trafficking human body parts after they were discovered at a checkpoint carrying a severed human head.

Pregnant Woman Dies In Port-Harcourt Hospital Over N20,000 Deposit

Pregnant Woman Dies In Port-Harcourt Hospital Over N20,000 Deposit
Dec 1st 2012, 20:40

A pregnant Nigerian lady has died because doctors in Port Harcourt insisted the husband must pay N20,000, less than $150, before she was treated. And her family members are still in shock about her death, such that they are not even thinking of burying her for now.

The 34 year old woman, Ijeoma Umumadumere, nee Ahamefule, was rushed in the morning of 25 November to Garrison Clinic in Port Harcourt, when she complained of a sudden stomach pain and headache, while cooking. Her husband rushed her to the clinic on Udom street in the oil rich city. It was between 9-10 a.m. And she was five-months pregnant.

But doctors and nurses would not attend to the pregnant woman because the husband only had N5,000 on him, instead of the N20,000 being demanded, as a precondition for treatment. Even the N5,000 the man had on him had been used to offset registration and other costs.

Her brother, based in Austria could not understand why doctors in a Nigerian hospital could have so callously and uncaringly treated the woman, pregnant with her first child. As he put it:

"Her husband begged the doctor and the nurses to attend to her since they had collected about N5, 000 he had in his pocket in the name of registration and other little things while he would go home and bring money. He had also told them that because of the nature of the emergency and the way his wife had been shouting while on the ground that his mind had only been pre-occupied with the thoughts of rushing her to any nearby hospital and had not thought of money or any other thing as he had even forgotten to put on shoes, but all his pleading and explanations to the doctor and the nurses had fallen onto deaf ears. With her pains increasing and death knocking and the doctor and the nurses refusing to understand, there was no way he could have left her there unattended, to go home and bring money. He took her and headed to another hospital, but unfortunately my sister did not make it as the damage had already been done before the doctors in that second hospital could do something reasonable to save her life."

"What a country, what a failure and what a loss! This is a sad story of the sorry state of the Nigerian health policy, how Nigerians are heartlessly and carelessly neglected because of money by doctors and nurses to die in hospitals, and how I lost my sister to a failed system,"wrote Uzoma Ahamefule, based in Austria.

Many hospitals in Nigeria, both private and public, are in the habit of asking for pre-payment from patients, even when the case is an emergency.
