Passionate plea to striking lecturers
Jul 15th 2013, 23:00, by Rotimi FADEYI

The Federal Executive Council last week appealed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to return to the classrooms in the interest of the nation and the students as government was making efforts to ensure that their grievances are addressed.

The Council expressed deep concern over the lingering strike which has paralysed academic activities in the nation's tertiary institutions. Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, explained that members of the Executive Council noted that the issue of education was of utmost importance to the present administration in ensuring progress and development in the country. Moro said: "On issues of national concern, the current impasse between the ASUU and the Federal Government was considered with some concerns by the Federal Executive Council.

We took a general overview of what has been happening in the educational sector and expressed the concern of average Nigerians, stakeholders, parents and students and came to the conclusion that passionate appeal should be made to ASUU to consider the overall interest of Nigeria, in terms of the education of our children, and to see the possibility of using a strike, which has become too incessant in recent times as a last resort."

He explained that the Federal Government was also concerned about the various challenges in the education sector which has forced many Nigerians to seek admission in other institutions outside the country.
