Delta commissioner accuses parents of aiding exam malpractices

Delta State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, has accused parents of encouraging examination malpractices. Muoboghare accused parents of inducing education officials with money during external examinations so that their children could be allowed to engage in malpractices.

The commissioner, who spoke yesterday at a press briefing in Asaba, the state capital, said: "Most of the illegal collections done in schools are for examination malpractices at the instant of parents who will entice officials with money in order to allow their children and wards carry out malpractices during external examinations."

Muoboghare said in a bid to discourage such acts and disabuse the mind of officials especially schools principals from illegal collections, the state government had deemed fit to increase schools subventions.

He said: "The policy of the government is that there should be no any form of collection in primary and secondary schools. So, many officials have been dismissed and some others demoted." To improve the standard of education, the commissioner said the government has shot over 600 illegal private primary and secondary schools across the state.

He said: "We also discovered that over the years, principals of public secondary schools were enticed with money by proprietors of illegal schools to enroll their pupils for external examinations, such practice is illegal and against the government's policy.

"We shall also close down registered private schools that operate in ramshackle and temporary sites because they were given five years to meet up with all the necessary requirements. Though, as soon as the requirements are met, the closed down schools would be re-opened."
