Aliyu urges mechanised farming as nation's oil revenue declines
Jul 15th 2013, 23:00, by PRISCILLA DENNIS

Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State has described the drop in oil income is a wake-up call to the nation to embark on mechanised farming so as to reduce over dependence on oil. He said presently, Nigeria's oil production has reduced from 2.5 million bpd early this year to 1.92 million bpd in May thereby creating panic.

Speaking while inaugurating a 15-man Agricultural Transformational Committee in Minna, the state capital, Aliyu noted that the situation could become worse if the United States commences the sales of its crude oil.

The governor, a member of the National Economic Council, (NEC), said: "We must no longer over rely on oil as it is now found in virtually every country in West Africa.

And people are finding other ways other than oil. The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the United States will, in the next two months, struggle for the oil market.

So, we must be conscious of this fact because since May, we have been finding it difficult with what is coming into the federation account. "Just last week, the Federal Allocation Committee (FAC) meeting was postponed because the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) could not pay money into the Federation Account."
