My granny died in December and that meant going home in January. By home, I mean my mother’s town.
Now here’s the thing about going home
10. Prayers galore. No matter what might be going on in their individual lives, people will always take time to pray for you. Whether you want the blessings or not.
9. Remember that hot cousin you knew? She’s no longer sexy, he’s no longer hot.
8. To some people, it doesn’t matter how much older you are now, you’re always that little girl. They’ll pull your cheeks, pat your head and tip you the same way they did back then.
7. If you’re from the West, where greeting someone older involves kneeling down, bye bye knees while you’re home
6. If you go home, either stick to your budget, or come back broke. You’re going to meet people you never knew you were related to. They will insist you are related and try to prove it. Don’t argue.
5. Memories can be great, though. Seeing where you spent time, remembering who did what and when, and having a laugh.
4. There’s only so much coolness you can muster with a thousand hugs, lifts and nicknames. Your friends may now call you ‘Buzz Lightyear’ but wait until you get home and you’re back to being ‘Skinny Legs’
3. There’s a lot of family, and people that you see, you recognise, you know you know, but can’t for the life of you remember. And when they ask, ‘Do you remember me?‘, you say yes and smile but pray they don’t then ask, ‘Then who am I?‘
2. It’s amazing how there’s a strong family network and it takes a wedding or a death to bring it all out. And when it ends, we go into hiding, to do it some time again.
