…Result was encouraging – Onigbinde

Former Super Eagles coach, Adeboye Onigbinde, believes Nigeria's performance against a Catalonia selected side on Wednesday will boost the players' confidence as they head to South Africa for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The CAF instructor said it would be difficult assessing the team while watching them on television but from what he saw, they did not perform badly against a side that paraded some of the best players in the world.

“The result was not bad because the Eagles played against Spanish players that have distinguished themselves in a highly competitive league,” Onigbinde said.

“If we consider that the Nigeria team were just recently put together, consisting of players from different leagues, then we should give them credit for doing well.

“However, you can't fully assess a match on the television. At any given time the camera would focus on a very narrow angle when a goal is scored so it is difficult to give an accurate assessment of the performance of the team.”

Onigbinde added that coach Stephen Keshi is experienced enough to guide the team to success in South Africa, saying giving unsolicited advice to the coach would be unethical.

“I don't know what Keshi has in his programme so it will be unethical and unprofessional for me to begin to tell him what to do,” he said.

“Apart from that, I'm not his technical assistant; I am not his technical adviser; and no authority has assigned me with that responsibility; and I don't want to become an irresponsible elder.”
