Osun State Government has said it has started the construction of 218.12 kilometer roads in the 30 local governments of the state.

A statement by the Director, Bureau of Communication and Strategy, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, on Wednesday said a 10-kilometre road would be constructed in each council.

According to the statement, the project to cost N16.21bn, is being financed by the councils and the Area Office in Modakeke.

It said the project "is entirely a local government financed project being coordinated and implemented in conjunction with the state government".

The statement quoted Governor Rauf Aregbesola as saying  part of the money would come from Excess Crude Oil Fund.

Aregbesola said, "Out of this amount, N6bn was put down while permission was taken from the House of Assembly to borrow the balance, which will be paid  within 60 months as a way to make the repayment easy for the local governments."

The governor said roads, billed to be completed between March and had been awarded.

He said, "What we are doing today is to tell the people that the road project is entirely the brainchild of the local government councils.

"The state government only partnered with them in the area of implementation and execution of the projects.

"What our administration is demonstrating with this road project is to tell the people that not all politicians are wasteful with regards to resource management."

Commissioner for Local Government, Mr Kolapo Alimi, commended the governor for the projects.

Executive Secretary of Ayedire Local Government, Mr. Gbenga Ogunkami, whose council area hosted the ceremony, lauded the state government for its achievements.

Ogunkanmi said, "I can tell you people today that the achievements of the Aregbesola government in just two years have by far surpassed the more than seven years of the past administration. The quality of the roads is different from what obtained in the past. The roads will have 20-year lifespan."
