Three separate auto accidents in Ogun State on Wednesday claimed 14 lives along major roads in different parts of the state.

Violence broke out on Wednesday in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State following the alleged killing of no fewer than five secondary school pupils by a truck loaded with granite.

Also, five other persons lost their lives at Ogere in Ikenne Local Government when a truck lost control, multiple auto accidents.

Another accident at Olodo, Odeda Local Government Area of the state along the old Abeokuta-Ibadan road led to the death of four persons.

No fewer than 50 vehicles were however allegedly vandalised by the residents of Itori, who violently protested against the alleged killing of the students by the truck.

The truck with number plate LAGOS XZ 628 AKD, heading towards Lagos, was said to have lost control, spilled its content and rammed into the students who just closed from school and were on their way home.

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the victims of the accident were buried under the spilled granite from the truck.

An Armoured Personnel Carrier, belonging to the Ogun State Police Command, was later deployed in the scene of the accident to restore order preparatory to the evacuation of the victims.

Ogun Police Command Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the killing of the five students in the Itori accident as well as that of Ogere in which another five persons lost their lives.

"We can confirm that about five students died in the accident and three others have been rushed to the hospital," he said.

Adejobi, an assistant superintendent of police, however said the Ogere road mishap was misconstrued for a robbery operation, urging residents to disregard such rumour.

"The command wishes to debunk the rumour of armed robbery at Ajebo area along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway today. It's a rumour. However, the command reiterates that the incident recorded after Ogere was a multiple fatal accident that claimed five lives.

"The accident was caused by a Dangote trailer which lost control. The traffic jam occasioned by the accident was then mistaken for robbery incident as usual," he said.

The police spokesman said the blocking of the road by angry students and members of the Itori community caused gridlock until the arrival of the police and other security agencies.

He added that it took the security agencies several hours before they could clear the blockade, saying the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Okoye Ikemefuna, had also visited the scene of the accident.
