TICKER: President Obama on his debate performance: "I was too polite"
Oct 11th 2012, 16:36

As Mitt Romney continues to rise in the polls, Democrats are still scratching their heads, trying to figure out why President Obama didn't mentally show up to the first presidential debate last week.

Pundits have speculated on all sorts of reasons for Obama's weak performance. Some say President Obama was tired and just doesn't like debates, while others have suggested that Obama is throwing the election. Until now, Obama hadn't directly addressed the issue.

But during an interview with Tom Joyner this morning, President Obama tried to talk Democrats down from the ledge and provide some reassurance:

Well, two things. I mean, you know, the debate, I think it's fair to say I was just too polite, because, you know, it's hard to sometimes just keep on saying and what you're saying isn't true. It gets repetitive. But, you know, the good news is, is that's just the first one. Governor Romney put forward a whole bunch of stuff that either involved him running away from positions that he had taken, or doubling down on things like Medicare vouchers that are going to hurt him long term.

…And, you know, I think it's fair to say that we will see a little more activity at the next one.

At least President Obama has some idea of what went wrong and he's aiming to fix it. That's reassuring considering that some of his aids confided to reporters that Obama initially thought he'd done fine in the debate until he was told otherwise.

This also puts a lot of pressure on Vice President Joe Biden to perform well during the V.P. debates.
