Labour Party criticises demolition of illegal structures in FCT
Sep 10th 2012, 14:29

The Labour Party on Monday criticised the ongoing demolition of unauthorised structures in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The FCT Chairman of the party, Mr Adejobi Peter, who said this in Abuja noted that forceful ejection of residents from their places of abode would subject them to untold hardship and called for the provision of alternative homes for the displaced persons.

"All over the world today, there is a shift from crude approaches to policies to those that have positive impact on human development,” Peter said.

He urged the FCT minister, Sen. Bala Mohammed to adopt the proposal submitted to the FCT Administration in 2010 by the leadership of Lugbe, one of the affected communities.

The document, Peter said,  was facilitated by the National Platform for Promoting Secure Tenure on the Upgrading Plan Proposal for Lugbe Community.

He added that the document was prepared by the International Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies, Netherlands.

"The minister should take a look at the proposal and see to its approval in the FCT and use it as a template. If the minister uses the Lugbe proposal, he will receive a higher commendation from United Nations Habitat. NAN
